Reflexión en grupo: Si no sé que estudiar, ¿soy un fracaso? (Group discussion: If I don't know what to study, am I a failure?)

 

El pasado miércoles 20 de septiembre, nos juntamos en clase en diferentes grupos para conocernos un poco y reflexionar sobre un artículo en concreto. Y, a pesar de no tratar mucho el artículo, tratamos el tema de este, "el empleo", pero conectándolo con nuestras experiencias. 

Es curioso porque, tras conocer un poco la trayectoria de cada uno, todos coincidimos en el hecho de que en los institutos no se ayuda lo suficiente o se orienta a los alumnos en lo que podrían estudiar, qué les puede proporcionar ese estudio y las salidas posibles. A excepción de una compañera, que contó que en su instituto tuvieron la oportunidad de pasar un día ya sea en una empresa, un colegio...dependiendo de lo que les interesase a sus alumnos. Y la verdad, es una buena manera de ver y conocer un poco un entorno en el que puede ser que te toque estar en unos años si lo estudias.

Pero en general, es preocupante que muchos alumnos lleguen a 2º de Bachillerato y estén estresados porque no tienen claro lo que quieren realmente y, en muchos casos, se debe a la desinformación que tienen a cerca de las carreras. No es la primera vez que un estudiante entra a una carrera y se encuentra con algo totalmente distinto a lo que pensaba y con un futuro empleo que detesta. Por eso, charlas o jornadas que muestren un poco los distintos caminos que puedes coger al terminar Bachillerato y qué ofrecen (en términos de asignaturas, prácticas, salidas...) son muy necesarias y podrían ayudar a muchos a tener las cosas más claras. 

Esto también nos llevó a otra idea relacionada, y es el pensamiento general de abandonar una carrera o unos estudios tras entrar. Normalmente, esto está visto como algo negativo y un fracaso en tu carrera como estudiante. Pero debería ser todo lo contrario. Es muy normal que una persona joven empiece a estudiar algo y, por distintas razones, encuentre algo que de verdad le apasiona o simplemente que llegue a darse cuenta de que no le gustaba tanto como pensaba y quiera cambiar. Incluso tras llevar 2-3 años estudiando la misma carrera puede pasar. Sin embargo, esto no debe ser un foco de estrés o sentimiento de fracaso. Es simplemente otro proceso en la vida que hay que vivir y es mejor darse cuenta de que quieres cambiar porque sabes que vas a ser infeliz y perseguir lo que realmente quieres. 

Por lo que, sacamos dos cosas claras en conclusión:

1. Una mejor orientación y conocimiento a los alumnos de lo que pueden estudiar en el futuro y las puertas que les puede abrir al mundo laboral ayudaría mucho a que puedan tener las ideas más claras y conseguir estudiar lo que les gusta.

2. El hecho de confundirse y necesitar cambiar de un camino a otro no es razón para martirizarse, sino que es un acto valiente en busca de lo que realmente les apasiona y por lo que trabajarían por vocación.

Last Wednesday, September 20, we got together in class in different groups to get to know each other a bit and reflect on a specific article. And, despite not dealing much with the article, we dealt with the theme of it, "employment", but connecting it with our experiences.

It is funny because, after knowing a little about each one's background, we all agree on the fact that high schools do not give enough help or guidance to students on what they could study, what this study can provide them with and the possible opportunities. With the exception of one colleague, who said that in her high school they had the opportunity to spend a day either in a company, a school... depending on what the students were interested in. And the truth is that it is a good way to see and get to know a little bit of an environment in which you might find yourself in a few years if you study it.

But in general, it is worrying that many students arrive at the 2nd year of Bachillerato and are stressed because they are not clear about what they really want and, in many cases, it is due to the misinformation they have about degrees. It is not the first time that a student enters a degree and finds something totally different from what he or she thought and a future job that he or she hates. For this reason, talks or conferences that show the different paths that you can take when you finish high school and what they offer (in terms of subjects, internships, job opportunities...) are very necessary and could help many to have things clearer.

This also led us to another related idea, and that is the general thought of abandoning a degree or studies after entering. Normally, this is seen as something negative and a failure in your career as a student. But it should be the opposite. It is very normal for a young person to start studying something and, for different reasons, find something they are really passionate about or simply come to realize that they did not like it as much as they thought and want to change. Even after 2-3 years studying the same career it can happen. However, this should not be a source of stress or a feeling of failure. It is just another process in life that you have to go through and it is better to realize that you want to change because you know you are going to be unhappy and pursue what you really want.

Therefore, we draw two different conclusions:

1. A better orientation and knowledge to students of what they can study in the future and the doors that can open to the world of work would help them to have clearer ideas and get to study what they like.

2. The fact of being mistaken and needing to change from one path to another is not a reason to martyr themselves, but rather a courageous act in search of what they are truly passionate about and what they would work for as a vocation.
